In 1984, Surfer Magazine published a story titled “San Diego Super Surf City.”

A generation later that reputation has been brought to a new level with the creation of the Center for Surf Research at San Diego State University, which educators and surf historians say is the first of its kind in the world.

The center, which will be lodged in the L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, will focus initially on sustainable surf tourism.

“We really do think San Diego is the center of the surf universe,” said Carl Winston, director of the hospitality school. “So it’s perfectly logical.”

Jess Ponting, a professor in the school’s sustainable tourism program, will be the director of the new teaching and research center.

“We are a nonprofit that will provide research and create knowledge that’s going to be useful to the private sector as well as the governments making decisions about the management of surf resources,” Ponting said.
