I am a Ph.D. from the UCSD Sociology Department, specializing in Ethnomethodology, Ethnosemiotics, and Ethnographic Film. I have taught at the university level, was national executive director of the Surfrider Foundation, and I am now working in the private sector at the intersections of mixed media “edutainment”, multicultural youth, the action and motor sports industries, music, fashion, technology and cause-related marketing.
I am interested in research into surfing eco-tourism, preservation of surfing sites and ecologies, world heritage surf sites, surfing non-profit and educational organizations, expanding the “social justice” side of surfing to new demographics and cultural sectors, indigenous participation, artificial surfing reefs, surf art and film, surfing history, the surf industry, and new developments in environmentally-friendly surfboard construction.
