Robin Canniford

University of Melbourne

Robin Canniford received his PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Exeter in the UK. His research explores the construction of ‘consumption’ and ‘consumers’ through the context of global surfing cultures. Robin currently works at the University of Melbourne within the faculty of Business and Economics. His recent work includes ethnographic investigations of how surfers claim ‘nature’ as a romantic space-time in spite of a variety of contradictions to ‘pure’ experiences of nature (Journal of Consumer Research 2013); a genealogical investigation of representations of surfing as ‘Primitive’ between the early-19th and mid-20th Centuries (Consumption Markets and Culture 2013); and a methodological project that seeks to understand the surfing experience through the lens of ‘vibrant matter’ (Marketing Theory). He is a regular visitor to his native Devon in the UK; is working on an ongoing project on sea-walls in Portugal; and inhabits a desk at the Surfing Heritage Foundation in San Clemente, California when he can.
