Reflections from the Field – Tavarua: Sick Day

After I wrote yesterday’s blog post, I ate dinner, and then shortly after that I began to feel sick, which was just the beginning…I was up all night and my third day here was spent trying to get rid of this “travel bug” I got from flying (people, crappy airline food, little sleep). That, combined with my first time experiencing the climate of the tropics, the conditions of a developing country, and Fijian food/water (not that’s it bad, it’s really good, it’s just that my body isn’t used to it)…left me bedridden.

I missed out on some great surf too..Jess got barreled twice in one wave at Cloudbreak this morning! He’s wanted to get barreled at Cloudbreak for years now so that was awesome to hear. While I was recuperating, Jess and Dylan made some progress on strategizing better ways to manage carrying capacities at the nearby surf breaks. Towards the end of the day, thanks to Jess’ help catering meals to my bure, and the resort doctor, Greg, I started to feel a lot better and I started to do some work of my own. I’m quarantined at the moment, Jess left my bure for another, and rightly so, because they said I could be very contagious and I don’t want to ruin anyone else’s time here. Luckily, I was able to get out of bed to see tonight’s sunset, which made my day not so bad anymore. It’s hard to be bummed here even if you are stuck inside…you still have a nice view.

Going…

Going…

Gone.

There’s supposed to be some more swell coming in tomorrow, but I’ll probably take it easy for another day before getting back on the board…but I better find something to do to keep my mind off all these mosquito bites!
